Fraternity Nueva Esperanza - San Salvador

On July 24, 2006 we received a letter from Brother Salvador Turcios inviting us to a meeting concerning Marist Fraternities and efforts to form new ones.

Thus on Saturday July 29th, 30 of us arranged to meet in the projection room to learn more about these groups. We decided to hold the first meeting of our new Fraternity the following Saturday in the library at Liceo Salvadoreño. About a dozen people attended, of whom 6 are still with us. A year later the Messengers of Christ Fraternity, one that had been launched along with ours, asked to join us and thus we gained about 8 new members, 4 of whom remain. At present we are 15 people and meet once a week to live the gift of fraternity.

The name for our fraternity, “New Hope,” was chosen from among several suggestions. Our logo consists of three violets, reminding us of the 3 virtues characteristic of St. Marcellin. Our slogan, “Hand in hand with Jesus and Mary,” illustrated by outstretched hands, helps us recall that we need to always work with them as a team.

To formalize our commitment, in early 2008, in a spirit of fervor we came together in the chapel at Liceo Salvadoreño. One of the women in our Fraternity summed up her feelings this way: “Little by Little we were entering into a deeper relationship with God through participating in our Marist Fraternity, as lay people better understanding the depths of our commitment to our family, friends and neighbors. At last the day has arrived, each of us is standing before a priest and voluntarily expressing our promise to work with the Lord side by side and to serve Him, desiring to follow in the footsteps of St. Marcellin as Christians on a mission to carry out the work that we have chosen.”

Fully aware of this commitment to follow Christ with the spirituality of St. Marcellin, encouraged by our Marist Province’s interest in the spiritual growth of our members and relying on our Good Mother’s loving care, our New Hope Fraternity has put together a Life Plan that pledges us to foster our fraternity, solidarity, spirituality, mission and apostolate by participating in the work of the Apostolate, Prayer, Formation and Family Committees we have put in place.

We also count on our spiritual advisor and friend Brother Feliciano Arroyo, who is ever ready to provide us with the necessary resources for our growth in the faith. Energized by his enthusiasm we go out to evangelize people needing words filled with hope and love. Included among our members is a married couple who are animating a new fraternity of parents and strengthening that aspect of the community. Some of our members teach catechism to poor children in the countryside, far away from parishes.

All our efforts to evangelize are focused on making Christ known and loved with the charism we have inherited from Saint Marcellin Champagnat.
