India Celebrates the Founder’s Day

Cmi

22/07/2008: India

We had a wonderful celebration of the founder’s day, made even more special because of the people we were happy to have with us celebrating. Bro. Mike de Waas, Sector Superior, was making a visit to the community here in Burdwan (Diocese of Asansol) from May 30th to June 4th. And so, we decided to celebrate Founder’s Day on June 3rd so that Mike could be with us.

We were most grateful too, though, because our Bishop Cyprian Monis, Bishop of Asansol, was able to celebrate with us. Bishop Monis has been a true shepherd to us, and even more, like a father to us. In that way, he is reminiscent of Fr. Champagnat, who was like a father to the early Brothers. Bishop Monis has taken a special care for us, and we are truly grateful to him for this attention. Bishop Monis also is known for his great love and concern for the local tribal Santali people.

Also joining us were a number of men and women religious in the area who came to celebrate the feast of our founder as part of their ongoing welcome to us and support as well. We have been privileged in the Diocese to be welcomed by so many.

We continued the celebration on June 7th, when Fr. Sebastian Rodriguez, Vicar General, came to celebrate a Mass also for the Founder’s feast day. We had given him a copy of Water from the Rock, and he used it as a basis for his homily about the Founder, his charism, and the Brothers.

These wonderful priests, religious, seminarians, and people have made our stay here so warm and welcoming. We find that so important because we are in the time of learning the culture of the people as well as the languages Bengali and Santali!

We thank everyone in the Marist world for the prayers and support they give not only to us, but to all the new MAG communities throughout Asia.
