Urban Campground - Colón Marist College – Huelva

28/08/2012: Spain

Lights, camera and action! Our camp could not start out differently since we are immersed in an Urban Campground dedicated to the seventh art: the Movies. Over eighty children from the slums of Perez Cubillas and some basic residential homes for minors in the capital of Huelva, enjoy from August 5th to the 14th an alternative for Leisure and Spare Time.   The Marist Associations “Nuevo Horizonte” (New Horizon) and “Grupos de Amistad” (Friendship Groups) have decided despite the economic cutbacks, to set up their traditional Urban Campground for the seventeenth consecutive year.

In these times that so frequently speak of crisis, there fortunately still are many public and private organizations that respond to the many calls received from the Association, such as:  Mediterranea Marist Province, Educational and Brothers Community of the Huelva College, School Council, Marist AMPA and Ademar Huelva, the NGOD “S.E.D.”,  The Social Health and Welfare Counsel of the Government of Andalucía, the Hon. Municipality of Huelva, the Hon. Municipality of Almonte and the Water Park Aquopolis which has the courtesy of maintaining the same discounts as previous years.

We would like to highlight the tireless work of the Camp animators who selflessly decide to dedicate their vacations to the education and entertainment of the children attending the same.  With these lines, our tribute goes to the 24 animators who do so with simplicity, humility and modesty, all characteristics they learned in the classrooms of the Marist College and which they still maintain, not only at the Camp but also in their work or academic environment.

The Urban Campground begins at 10 in the morning with the motivational theatre of the day; it features different characters from films and attempts to transmit the values of the Camp: Enthusiasm, fellowship and poise.  Then, there are numerous leisure activities, including a swimming pool, until lunchtime when a tasty menu is enjoyed, to then tidy up all together. In the afternoon, several activities continue until 8 pm, including a snack to recover energy!  There are several visits to the beach, the town of Almonte, the Water Park and on Tuesday they will enjoy a game throughout the town of Huelva, while they learn about its most emblematic places: Casa Colón, San Pedro Square, Reina Victoria Neighbourhood, the old English Hospital, the old Columbine Stadium and the Quintero Baez Square.

This year, the Camp Team is highly conscious of the people of Syria since they are involved in a military conflict. They have shared a special friendship with the country’s Marist Community for nine years to the extent they personally visited our premises in the Perez Cubillas slums in 2010, to get ideas and observe how we work at the different projects of the Association throughout the year: directed study, intervention with minors at social risk, literacy of migrants and different field trips.
