3rd Forum of Marist Social Units

03/09/2012: Brazil

The Marist Province of Brazil Centre-North held the 3rd Forum of Marist Social Units in Brazilandia (DF), from August 5th to the 8th. With the theme for 2012 “Whom do we serve when we serve the poor?”, the event was attended by Brothers, managers, coordinators and educators of the Social Units from the entire Province.

The objective of the Forum was to observe the aspects of the socioeconomic and political situation in accordance with the recent changes within the legal framework of the entities that apply gratuities in Education and Social Welfare; and, to reflect on the best practices and new strategies of articulation and intervention in conjunction with the most diverse audiences addressed, taking as a reference the local Social Unit, as well as jointly setting priorities for the next three-year period 2012-2015.

A video of the General Superior of the Institute, Br. Emili Turu, was shown during the opening of the event. In his message, he asked the participants to the 3rd Forum to not focus the tone of the event only on technical discussions, rather, and especially, to be willing to be touched spiritually so as to reaffirm the conviction and commitment to the dream of Champagnat. He stated: “This dream challenges us to increasingly approach our children, adolescents and youngsters, especially those most in need” (see video below).

The Provincial Superior Br. Wellington de Medeiros, in his opening address, referred to an excerpt of the 21st General Chapter Charter: “We feel compelled to act with urgency to find new and creative ways to educate, evangelize and defend the rights of the poor children and youngsters, showing our solidarity with them”. According to the Provincial, the Province has a strong commitment to education, evangelization and the protection of the rights of the poor children and adolescents.
