Young people from Curitiba receive the World Youth Day symbols

19/03/2013: Brazil
IMYM | 17-21 July 2013

Faith, emotion, and a sense of unity marked the passage of the Pilgrim Cross and the Icon of Our Lady in the Marist centers of Curitiba. They were a gift from Pope John Paul II to the youth of the world, and have become symbols of the World Youth Day (WYD). The Parana Marist School and the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR) received these two symbols on February 25.

Students from Catholic schools in Curitiba came together to welcome the Cross and Icon at the Paraná Marist School. For nearly two hours, the young people, teachers from the Catholic schools, and religious were gathered around the slogan of WYD 2013 – “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 18:29) – and participated in different activities.

At that point the symbols were taken from the Paraná Marist School to the University. At 4:30 p.m., Monsignor Moacyr Vitti, Archbishop of Curitiba, gave his blessing to the university students from different Catholic institutions, as well as to the Marist collaborators. Then the young people went in procession to the chapel with the Cross and Icon, where everyone participated in the celebration presided over by the Archbishop, with the contribution of the Champagnat Choir and the PUCPR Orchestra. Finally, university students from different fields prepared intercession prayers and recited them for the entire community.

The pilgrimage of the Cross and Icon in Brazil will continue until July, the month that marks the beginning of World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro.
