Fire in the main chapel: 11 June 2013

12/07/2013: France

Tuesday, the midday meal was not yet finished. A light cloud of smoke invaded the park. We went looking for information: fire had taken hold of the roof of the chapel of the neighbouring high school. A little later, around 12.30, the police asked the community to evacuate and directed us to a town hall. The students had also had to leave the place earlier. There were only about 40 of the 350, the others being at exams or at training.

About 3.30 we were able to return to the buildings of the community which were intact.

What had happened? The roof of the chapel was being repaired. The sparks from a blowtorch had started a fire which the workers were unable to control. The firemen had had to intervene; there were fifteen of them to fight the blaze.

Consequences : the roofing of the chapel completely destroyed. But the adjacent buildings intact, so that the high school will be opening normally on Monday 17th. On the other hand, the angels did not have to suffer much, being protected by the dome of the choir.

All that remains is for the experts to evaluate the damage. Three insurances are involved: that of the company, that of the high school, and that of the Owners’ Association.

Even if the damages are serious, they could have been worse, no accident to any person…

We can thank Mary for protecting us!
