An experience of community life with young adults

19/08/2013: Canada

The experience of community life with young adults is a project proposed by the Marist Brothers in their residence in Montréal. It is open to young people, girls and boys, from 18 to 35, «open to the religious dimension », but sometimes having very few Christian reference points. They can live there for a whole year or simply for a university term of four months. The engagement can be extended over two or three years.

It involves a sort of «laboratory of fraternal life in the name of the Gospel» proposed to those who are questioning themselves about life and the great existential questions. These young people are also open to the Christian values conveyed through the group. The experience fosters the discovery of their «proper vocation » as citizen and as Christian, whatever the road they follow. We dare to say that each will thus discover a little better his or her specific mission in the world and in the Church.

The community is composed of 12 university students, divided equally between boys and girls, and three Marist Brothers. In September 2013, we will be in the fourth year of the experiment. To our great surprise, we receive many requests even if we have never advertised. This is done principally by the young people themselves.

How today to be witness of evangelical values in the world and particularly among university students? For us Brothers, this hospitality for university youth allows us to live a «Come and see». Far from wishing to « preach » the Good News at any cost, we simply open the doors of our way of life to share with them our daily routine in a project articulated and accepted by each one. You can easily guess that this opening also has its demands and challenges, as much on the level of quality of community life being lived as on the level of the relevance of our religious life inserted into a laicizing and secularised world.
