The Hermitage Downunder

29/03/2006: Australia

The Marist Brothers began their ministry in Australia in 1872. Within six months of arriving in the country the Brothers had opened a novitiate and so began formation in the Marist way in the southern hemisphere. Numbers grew rapidly, and so by the turn of the century there was a need to open a dedicated training house and a rural site, 100km south of the city of Sydney was chosen.

This year, 2006 marks 100 years of Marist formation of this site in the town of Mittagong. To mark the centenary Mittagong has been renamed The Hermitage and is being redeveloped to resemble our mother house in France – a place of spiritual nourishment and rejuvenation in the Marist way. A place to be enriched by the heritage of Marcellin for Lay Marists and Brothers, and especially for the young. Learn more by visiting www.maristoz.edu.au
