13/05/2013: Malawi

On 10th May, 2013, the remains of Brother Vincent Chunga were buried in the cemetery of the Marist Brothers at Mtendere, Malawi.

Present were his visually challenged elderly mother, other members of the family, all the Marist Brothers presently in Malawi, Br. Paul Nkhoma physically challenged was unable to travel, a large number of priests, and innumerable selection of religious sisters and Brothers, ex-Marists, friends, “Old Boys”, and representatives of all the Marist Schools in Malawi.

Bishop Joseph M. Zuza of Mzuzu, Bishop Thomas L. Msusa of Zomba, and Mgr John Chithonje, Vicar General of Dedza Diocese celebrated the Mass for the repose of the soul of Brother Vincent. The main speakers at the event spoke of Brother Vincent’s loyalty as a Marist Brother, his commitment to the youth, his vision, and dedication towards uplifting the least favouredaround him. The Mtendere Parish choir sang prayerfully with hymns appropriate for the occasion.

Throughout Vincent’s chemotherapy treatment, the Brothers in Zomba were very attentive to his needs and went out of their way to make him comfortable. A special mention must also be made of the support and care given to him by members of his family who provided an attentive and helpful presence all along.

May the spirit which animated Brother Vincent continue to live and develop among the present and coming generations of Brothers, teachers, and students he has been in contact with over the years! Now that Vincent is in the company of the saints, may he help us to become true and faithful followers of Champagnat.
