Letter from Brother Seán Sammon, Superior General

11 March 2004

Dear Brothers and friends,

By now you would be aware of the shocking explosions and tragic loss of life that occurred in Madrid during the morning rush hour today. Early reports indicate that two bombs were detonated around 7:30 a.m. local time in a commuter train arriving at Atocha station, a hub for metro and commuter trains in the country’s capital. This and subsequent explosions have resulted in almost 200 deaths and 1500 wounded.

At the moment our brothers in Spain have no report of members of the Institute, lay colleagues, students, or other members of the school communities at Chamberí or San José del Parque having been killed or injured.

Our hearts and prayers can only go out to our brothers and sisters in Spain at this time of national tragedy and loss. Their grief must be enormous.

Events such as this morning give rise to feelings of outrage and a desire to strike back. Only our faith and the message of the gospel can sustain us in the face of such wanton killing and maiming. I have written to our brothers in Spain in my name, that of Luis and the Council, and all who make up our Institute worldwide to express our grief and to promise them that we will pray with and for them and the people of the country during the days and weeks ahead, and will do everything we can to help.

Let us pray that Mary, our Good Mother and sister in faith, and Marcellin be constant companions at this difficult time. And let us continue to work for peace among nations, between peoples, and in the hearts of each one of us.

Blessings and affection,

Brother Sean D. Sammon, FMS
Superior General
