100 members of the Marist Family commemorate Fourvière

Nearly 100 members of the Society of Mary, known as “the Marist family,” met in Sydney to celebrate the 199th anniversary of the Fourvière promise.

Marist Brothers, Marist Fathers, Marist Sisters, Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary and lay Marists gathered at Villa Maria on July 19 in Hunters Hill, recalling the promise in which 12 Marist aspirants, priests and seminarians made to Our Lady of Fourvière to devote themselves to the foundation of the Society of Mary in 1816.

The event, which was hosted by the Marist Fathers, included a Eucharistic celebration at Holy Name of Mary Church, celebrated by Father Gavin Foster.

During the Mass, he spoke about how the Marist charism inspires young people and how the Society of Mary “has the mission of keeping that mission alive today.”

After the Mass, members of each congregation presented the Fourvière story in a power point presentation, reflecting on what the Fourvière promise means for Marists today.

Father Paul Mahony, the community leader of Mont Bel, which is the new retirement residence for the Marist Fathers at Hunters Hill, led the event.
