15 years of existence
In Mérida, Yucatán, México, the Marist Brothers have been working for more than 90 years. One of the fruits of this work has been the foundation in 1996, by a group of lay Marists, of a University, which has now completed 15 years of existence.
On 26 April, more than 1000 persons gathered in the buildings of the University to praise and bless God with a Eucharist for this Marist university life.
The celebration was presided over by Mons. Jorge Carlos Patrón, former chaplain of the University and had an impressive youthful colouring.
The work, commitment and participation of the students was fundamental for this great celebration. As a Marist University, the brothers worked with them in the preparation and development. The participation of intendants, directors and masters made it a very family affair.
We had various signs of praise and participation, such as the formation of an enormous cross at the beginning of the ceremony, the making and presentation of images of Champagnat and our Good Mother which inspired different parts of the Mass. The youth built the altar and invited the assembly to praise God with the singing of the Sanctus in a singular and youthful manner. The Spirit was very present.
The choir was composed of students from very different economic backgrounds. Together they gave testimony that the Marist University provides the possibility for a brotherly encounter for all.
Those taking part exchanged the sign of peace by means of a bracelet and many held up cloths spelling out in large letters: “Thank you, Lord”.
Homage was paid to Br Manuel Franco as inspirer of the work and to Master Luis Ramírez, affiliated to the Institute for his love of and collaboration in the Marist work.
A youthful Eucharist, a very Marist Eucharist with expressions of a new Church which seeks to be closer to young people.
In Mérida, we are very happy for the blessings of God, of our Good Mother and of our saintly founder Marcellin through the Marist University throughout these fifteen years.
We have the challenge, posed by our Superior General, to continue and strengthen from this Institution care for the most poor and needy. Let us journey on towards 2017 to accomplish still more for Marist life in Mérida, Yucatán!
