Active members of the new La Valla

Sixty members of the Marist Family of Portugal gathered in Carcavelos on March 26 to celebrate the Bicentenary. Several of the participants were former students of the Marist school of Carcavelos. It was like returning to the sources.

The encounter focused on three words of Superior general Brother Emili Turú’s message for the Bicentenary: gratitude, forgiveness, commitment. A fourth word was added to these: Mary.

Manuel do Rosario, member of the encounter’s organizing committee, summarized the meaning of the words that Brother Emili mentioned in his video published on January 2.

Brother Manuel Silva, former missionary in East Timor and in Honduras, covered the topic of Mary.

“Mary, the Lord’s first disciple, faithful and committed woman and our Good Mother, accompanies us and opens the path towards the third Marist centenary filled with hope,” stated Br Manuel during the encounter. “Mary, who always did everything among us, will continue to protect us.”

Brother Teófilo Minga closed the encounter presenting a few current topics in the Institute’s philosophy and way of acting, highlighting aspects such as internationality, the launching of a Marist volunteer service, the international missionary collaboration, mystics, prophecy, communion and the Marists of Champagnat.

He also spoke about the upcoming General Chapter that will be held in Colombia this September. The chosen topic is significant: a new La Valla.

All of the participants saw it as an invitation to be active members of this new La Valla.
