A consistory is a meeting of cardinals, convened and presided over by the pope.
At present there are ordinary consistories in which the pontiff meets with the cardinals present in Rome to consult them “on some serious questions” or for “certain acts of maximum solemnity”.
An extraordinary consistory is celebrated when it is recommended by special needs of the Church or the gravity of the matters to be dealt with and for this purpose all cardinals are summoned.
Only ordinary consistories can be public, that is, when in addition to the cardinals, prelates are admitted, diplomatic representatives of civil societies and others are invited to the gathering.
The office that organizes the liturgical celebrations presided over by the pope has informed that on Saturday, May 19, Pope Francis will preside over the celebration of the ordinary public consistory for the canonisation of the Blessed:
– Paul VI (Giovanni Battista Montini), Sumo Pontífice;
– Oscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez, archbishop of San Salvador, Martyr;
– Francesco Spinelli, diocesan priest, founder of the Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament;
– Vincenzo Romano, diocesan priest;
– Maria Caterina Kasper, Virgin, Foundress of the Institute of the Poor Servants of Jesus Christ;
– Nazaria Ignazia de Santa Teresa de Jesús (née: Nazaria Ignazia March Mesa), Virgin, Foundress of the Congregation of the Cross Missionary Sisters of the Church.
