Br. John Hazelman
June 17, Brother Ernesto Sánchez, Superior General, sent a letter to the Brothers of the Pacific District announcing to them the appointment of Brother John Hazelman as the next Superior of the District, for a period of three years.
Brother John will replace Brother David McDonald, leader of the District for the last six years and the last provincial of New Zealand. The change of leadership will take place on December 12, during the next District Chapter.
In his letter, Brother Ernesto expresses his thanks to Brother David for the years that he has spent guiding the Marists of this region: "you have served your Administrative Unit with energy and creativity, dealing with the various situations and building a common dream for the future of our Marist life."
The District of the Pacific is formed at the present of communities in 5 countries: Fiji, Quiribati, New Zealand, Samoa and American Samoa.
Br. John Hazelman
Brother John was born on Oct. 6, 1968 in Western Samoa and made his first profession on Nov. 21, 1992.
He graduated from MAPAC in 1998 and made his perpetual profession on Jan. 20, 2001.
He holds a Master's Degree in pastoral counselling from La Salle University in Manila. He also studied at the Institute of Religious Formation in Chicago and at the Formation Training Institute in Manila.
He was a staff member of MAPAC from 2005 – 2011, during which time he was vice rector and acting rector (for six months).
Subsequently, he worked as director of Mulivai Marist Primary School in Samoa until he returned to the Philippines and assumed the position of Rector of MAPAC in April 2017.
