Brother Niño Pizarro appointed Assistant Director of the Secretariat of Education and Evangelization

The Superior General and his Council have appointed Brother Niño Pizarro, from the Province of East Asia, as the new Assistant Director of the Secretariat of Education and Evangelization for a period of three years. He will assume this role beginning July 15, 2023, replacing Brother Mark Omede, from the Province of Nigeria.

The Secretariat for Education and Evangelization, together with the General Council, works on various initiatives in the field of Marist mission at the global level.  These include the networks of schools, universities, publishing houses and Marist youth ministry. The Secretariat is also coordinating the updating of the text on Marist Education, the “Stand Up, Speak Up & Act” project to encourage the participation and empowerment of children and young people, activities related to the Global Education Pact, preparing the Third International Marist Mission Assembly.

Since January 2023, the director of the Secretariat is Br José Sánchez. The Secretariat counts with the support of Javier Llamas (Schools Network Project Manager), Diugar Madera (Assistant), Angela Mediero (communication and marketing) and Luis Perez (IT volunteer).

Br. Niño is currently the Principal of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU), Integrated Basic Education Department (IBED), Lagao campus, an accreditor of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) and a member of PAASCU High School (JHS and SHS) Commission.

He developed his passion for education of the young from his previous professional assignments as teacher in Notre Dame of Kidapawan College and Marist College, Inc., coordinator of the Alternative Education in Notre Dame of Dadiangas College – IBED Lagao Campus, in charge of candidates in the Pre-Novitiate Program of the Marist Brothers of the Schools in General Santos City, Principal of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University – IBED Espina Campus and President of Marist College, Inc.

The Marist Patrimony Formation Program in Rome widened his understanding about Marist education from the perspective of the Founder of the Marist Brothers, St. Marcellin Champagnat.

In his journey, Br. Niño draws inspiration and strength from his family, from Marist community and his life experiences that constantly encourage him to attain greater heights in life.

He has just celebrated his twenty-five years as a Marist Brother. At present, he is a candidate for  graduation in the program, Doctor of Philosophy in Education major in Educational Leadership and Management at De La Salle  University (DLSU). His dissertation is entitled, “Embodying the Marist Values in Education: A Grounded Theory Approach”.

He finished Master of Arts in Educational Administration at Ateneo de Davao University, and Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, major in Religious Education at Notre Dame of Marbel University.

Br. Niño loves sports, music and arts. He is passionate in playing lawn tennis, badminton, and basketball. He also enjoys cycling, running and swimming. He has a book, “That We May Remember Saint Marcellin Champagnat and Principles of Marist Education”, that offers eight principles for Marist Pedagogy for Marist teachers and applicable means for implementation.

He is from Midsayap, North Cotabato, Philippines and a youngest in a family of eight.
