FMSI and FUNDAMAR
A joint stakeholders’ submission prepared by FMSI and FUNDAMAR for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Guatemala was submitted on the 10th of April in Geneva (Switzerland). The UPR is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States once every four and a half years. It is a State-driven process, under the auspices of the Human Rights Council. The Republic of Guatemala will be reviewed during the 14th Session of the UPR working group, which will take place from the 22nd of October to the 5th of November 2012, according to the tentative calendar of the UPR Sessions recently published by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Guatemala ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1990 and its two Optional Protocols in 2002 and is therefore legally bound to ensure every child’s full enjoyment of their rights. The submission – a 6 page document – aims to highlight issues of social justice for children and adolescents in Guatemala with regard to the country’s international obligations. It does so in two ways: firstly it identifies certain critical areas and then urges the government to take action against these violations.
