FMSI attends ?Global Conference on Children on the Move?
FMSI attended the ‘Global Conference on Children on the Move’ in Berlin, Germany, on June 12 and 13, to discuss with UN members and other agencies from around the world ways of improving the rights of children. Other participants included civil society organisations, donors, the private sector, government representatives, academics, practitioners, as well as children and youths.
The Conference’s panel included Marta Santos Pais, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children, and François Crépeau, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants.
The event took place within the context of the 2016 New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, and as the international community proceeds towards the Global Compact on Refugees and the Global Compact on Safe Orderly and Regular Migration.
The Global Conference on Children on the Move aimed at bringing together stakeholders to reflect, and provide important information to decision makers. It also hoped at ensuring that State commitments comply with obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child and that these are upheld in the text of the negotiated pacts.
FMSI aimed at contributing with the Institute of the Marist Brother’s expertise, working with children and young people in 80 countries, and more specifically with migrant children in 11 countries in the five continents.
Its presence also aimed at supporting the initiative to include the right to education in the global compacts in terms of school availability, accessibility, acceptability and adaptability throughout the migration cycle and the child life cycle, based on an integral care approach.
FMSI also took the opportunity to distribute its publication “Rights without borders. Marist initiatives for the care of migrants and refugees”, launched on June 5.
The event was organised by the Initiative for Child Rights in the Global Compacts, a multilateral initiative supported by 27 organizations, co-chaired bySave the Childrenand Terre des Hommes.
