FMSI promotes ecology and sustainability in Mérida
The Marist International Solidarity Foundation (FMSI), an NGO of the General Administration of the Institute, aims to promote initiatives that highlight the important connection between the environment and human rights. A significant example of its commitment in this area is the project, which takes place in Mexico, described in the “Fratelli Tutti” guide of the Federation of International Christian-inspired Voluntary Organisations (FOCSIV).
The project reflects the importance of adopting sustainable approaches, especially in communities that live in conditions of vulnerability and marginalization.
In collaboration with the Marist University of Merida (UMM), FMSI has launched an initiative to promote the rights of indigenous Maya communities in the Cuxtal Reserve, near the city of Merida, Yucatan. The project aims to integrate traditional ecological knowledge into official school curricula, training teachers and students on the need to protect the environment and adopt sustainable agro-ecological practices for the future.
One of the central themes of the project is the promotion of healthy eating, particularly among women and mothers, as they are traditionally responsible for food preparation. The project started by focusing on women, identifying local leaders to engage their communities. A group of 300 students and local promoters has been formed with the goal of “restoring the value of traditional foods”.
The project is divided into three key phases: 1) food selection, 2) beginning cultivation, and 3) practicing traditional cooking methods.
This approach fosters a change in perspective among students, who reconnect with and appreciate their cultural heritage while contributing to environmental conservation. Through these educational activities, the project encourages the inhabitants of the Cuxtal Reserve to recognize the value of their natural environment and to promote agricultural practices that respect the local ecosystem, thus contributing to food sovereignty and sustainability.
The guide “Fratelli Tutti” by FOCSIV, is a valuable resource for sharing experiences related to international solidarity and cooperation for sustainable development. Each project featured in the guide, including FMSI’s initiative in Mexico, highlights the importance of environmental sustainability and human rights protection around the world.
Through this and other projects, FMSI demonstrates its commitment to promoting an ecologically sustainable future for vulnerable communities, making a tangible contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
