Letters of Marcellin – 166

Marcellin Champagnat

1837-12-15

In reply to Fr. Drevets letter, which has not been preserved, Fr. Champagnat thanks him for the confidence he shows him, congratulates him for his parishioners good dispositions, and promises him brothers. However, he asks to see the approval of the bishop of Grenoble, with whom the Founder is negotiating on another matter. As far as we know, it had to be about the withdrawal of the brothers from La-Côte-Saint-André, which is discussed in LL. 86, 93 and 94. This same idea will be brought up again in another letter (L. 206), to Fr. Merlin, parish priest of Saint-Geoire, and during that whole time, the question of the withdrawal of the brothers from La Côte will remain pending.

Finally, whether because this hoped-for arrangement never came to pass, or because Fr. Drevet was transferred in the course of the following year, the question of Luzinay was not raised again, not even in the bishops letter of 2nd September 1838 (AFM 128.9), which established the order of urgency of the schools to be taken over in the diocese: Saint-Geoire, Crolles, Saint-Lattier, and Bougé-Chambalud.

Father and esteemed Pastor,

I am very grateful for the confidence you so kindly show us by asking us for brothers. The unanimous agreement of your good parishioners for the religious education of their children gives well-grounded hope for the success of an establishment of this type in your town. For our part, we will do all we can to give you brothers as soon as possible.

Perhaps, Father, His Lordship your bishop would be interested to learn of your project and the steps you have taken. We would be pleased to receive some assurance of his agreement. This communication would be useful to us in a matter which we have to take up with His Grandeur, and whose success could put us in a position to send you brothers even this year.

Father and esteemed Pastor, your most devoted,

Champagnat
