Letters of Marcellin – 231

Marcellin Champagnat

1838-12-05

In the biography of Fr. Menut published in La semaine religieuse of Le Puy we read that, In 1834, he began building the brothers house; a letter from Bro. Polycarpe, dated 24th October 1881, tells us that the Brothers of the Sacred Heart moved in a few days later. What his biographer did not know was that he had first written to Fr. Champagant, as the present letter shows; the projected delay must have seemed too long to wait. So he wrote to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, not in 1881 as mistakenly stated above, but no doubt in 1841, since a letter of Bro. François in April 1843 makes it evident that by that time the Brothers of the Sacred Heart were established in Sainte-Sigolène (cf. AFM, RCLA, 1, p.445).

Father,

Thank you for the confidence you show me. I am going to enter your request as you wish. As for the donation you would be ready to make in our favor, I think you can find some other more suitable way. I will tell you frankly that we are not interested in becoming landowners in the towns to which we send our brothers, for reasons which I can tell you in person.

Please accept the assurance of the devotedness with which I have the honor to be, Father, etc….
