Since the reply of the preceding August (L. 265) has left him some hope of obtaining brothers, Fr. Thorin returns to the attack as soon as the new school year has begun, hoping to be served the following year. But conditions have not changed much from one year to the next. This is where the exchange of letters stops; the Marist Brothers never went to Lancié.

Father,

We are obliged to stand by the terms of our first letter, dated 16th August 1839, nº 159.
1º It will not be possible for us to give you brothers for at least three years;
2º Our brothers do not go to an establishment until everything is ready;
3º If you persevere in your project of having brothers despite the delay we are obliged to impose, then when you have got everything ready, we will make it our duty to send a brother there to visit the establishment.

We very much regret that the number of our subjects is not proportionate to that of our needs; it would be a real pleasure for us to be able to carry out your pious plans immediately.
