Marists in Australia celebrate 150 years of Marist education

Marists of Champagnat in Australia are celebrating 150 years of life and mission. In 1872 the Marist Brothers first formed a community and established a school in Australia. They arrived at the invitation of the Archbishop of Sydney to assist in developing schools for young Australian people.

During this year, there are 3 events that will celebrate this milestone.

As part of the commemoration, on 1 January 2022, Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat Limited and Marist Schools Australia Limited became operational. Both companies have independence in their operations, but a healthy element of interdependence with the other Marist entities.

A prominent event to mark the Sesquicentenary will be the launch of the 150 Year History, prepared under the auspices of the Province Patrimony Committee, and written by John Luttrell, Julian Casey, Neville Solomon and Peter Rodney. It will be officially released in June or August. Province events will have a sesquicentenary flavour and Marist Schools Australia is also planning activities for the schools.

The third 2022 event is focused on the future: the establishment of the Star of the Sea Province, on 8 December. Work progresses with various groups meeting to further explore issues and make recommendations about what’s required for the future vitality of Champagnat’s Marists in all Oceania. The Brothers from the Province of Australia and de District of the Pacific are currently discerning the needs and leadership of the new Province, and when finalised and announced, this will be a major step forward.

“We should approach the Sesquicentenary not with any triumphalism, but with a profound sense of humble gratitude: to God, our collaborators and supporters and the brothers who’ve gone before us” said Br. Peter Caroll, Provincial of Australia.
