Marist Notebooks 42 is the first one to be published following the Marist Symposium of December 2023, which included a retrospective on past Marist research as well as anticipation of the bicentenary of the Hermitage in 2024-25. In the issue, we will speak, of course, of our alma mater, from a variety of different perspectives and time periods.
On the topic of the Hermitage, following a brief article dealing with the problematic blessing of the foundation stone (Br. AndrĂ© Lanfrey), two authors (Brothers JesĂșs Bayo Mayor and AndrĂ© Lanfrey) explore the idea of Marcellinâs project as a mystical city, probably influenced by MarĂa of Ăgreda. Daily life in the early years of the Motherhouse is considered by Mr Francisco Flores SĂĄnchez and Mrs Amelia Trejo Larenas. An article by M. Eric Perrin, a researcher who has already enriched our knowledge of marist origins, recalls the difficult years 1903-1906, those of the sale and purchase of l’Hermitage.
Br. André Lanfrey takes opportunity to draw up an inventory of the Institute and its works in France on the eve of their partial dissolution in 1903. This article segues to a related topic, one that is perhaps not sufficiently studied globally: the boarding schools of the Marist Brothers. Two articles give an account of them, not only in France (Br André), but also in Mexico (Br Rubén Navas) with the boarding schools of the Sierra Tarahumara. From the middle of the nineteenth century, these establishments constituted the pedagogical, intellectual, administrative and missionary framework of the Institute.
We conclude with two other original works. The first, by M. Perrin, addresses a small archaeological question by dealing with the restoration of the sundial that is installed in the grounds of the Hermitage. We know its maker (Abbé Guyoux), and the date of its construction (1851) but we do not know when it was installed (see MN No.34, 2016). On a completely different topic, M. Julien Béchard, the new archivist of the Marist Brothers in France, presents us with the inventory of the records concerning Henri VergÚs fms, the Brother murdered in Algeria, and recently beatified.
