Marists in Peru promote solidarity programmes in their schools

Since the beginning of the health emergency in Peru (Santa María de los Andes Province), due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the boards of directors of the 10 Marist educational works have been promoting solidarity campaigns to support and assist their students, their families, school workers and other institutions.

Through their solidarity programmes, the Marists provide accompaniment in situations of bereavement and illness, promote fundraising and basic baskets according to people’s needs, offer scholarships to students in their schools and provide devices for their students to connect to virtual classes.

Likewise, the brothers and lay Marists also support the different campaigns promoted by the archbishoprics or bishoprics in the country, depending on their jurisdiction.

Solidarity activities are being carried out in Marist schools, around the works and other institutions, with the following objectives:

  • To attend to the pressing needs that have been arising.
  • To collaborate with families in the education of their children.
  • To sustain faith and hope in the face of the pandemic situations experienced by the workers, students and families of the Marist schools.
  • Support the communities and society in which the schools are located.

Through solidarity activities, Marists follow the call of the 22nd General Chapter to respond boldly to emerging needs.

From Rome, solidarity activities are developed in close liaison with the Solidarity Secretariat of the Marist Institute, which coordinates and strengthens solidarity throughout the Marist world. This Secretariat works mainly in the areas of Education in Solidarity, Children’s Rights and Ecology, without forgetting other fields such as Social Works, Project Development, Refugees, Immigrants, Native Peoples…
