Members of the 23rd General Chapter
The23rd General Chapter of the Marist Brothers, scheduled to take place in Tagaytay, Philippines, in September 2025, is currently in its preparatory phase. During this time, the Administrative Units are conducting the process of electing the delegates who will participate. The elections must take place between October 1, 2024, and January 31, 2025, depending on the specific circumstances of each region, as outlined in the Constitutions and Statutes of the Institute and in the norms of the 2017 General Chapter.
The General Chapter is made up of ex-officio members and of elected members. The number of those elected must be greater than the number of those who are ex-officio members. Some people are also invited as guests.
Ex-officio members
There will be 34 ex-officio members: the current Superior General (1) and former Superior General (1), Vicar General (1), General Council (6), Provincials (22) and District Superiors (3).
Elected delegates
There will be 49 elected delegates: two from each of the twenty-two Provinces (44), one from each of the three Districts (3) and up to 2 additional members appointed by the General Council, if necessary, to ensure adequate representation.
The election of these delegates is conducted through a secret ballot and by absolute majority, as stipulated in the Constitutions and Statutes. This process will take place in each Province and District, where perpetually professed brothers could be elected by all brothers, whether in temporary or perpetual profession.
This election process will take place in an atmosphere of prayer and fraternal dialogue, as emphasized in the official convocation. The goal is for the elected delegates to serve as the voice of the Marist Institute, working together in communion with the Holy Spirit to make decisions that ensure the vitality and future of the Marist mission worldwide.
Invited guests
The Chapter will also include invited guests, who will be selected by the Superior General and his Council. The number of guests will not exceed 20% of the total number of delegates, which amounts to a maximum of 16 people. These guests will participate in the Chapter to contribute to the discussions, although they will not have the right to speak or vote in the decision-making process. In consultation with the Preparatory Commission, the nature and duration of the invited participants’ involvement will be defined.
“On this journey, we are invited to follow the boldness and trust of Saint Marcellin, who, guided by the Holy Spirit, was able to look beyond and build a community of hope. May this General Chapter be an opportunity to renew our commitment to the Marist mission, with generosity and fraternity, and to continue planting the seeds of the future in the lives of our young people and communities.” — Br. Ernesto Sánchez Barba, Superior General
