Nigeria?s ninth Provincial Chapter

Nigeria held its ninth provincial chapter from Jan. 9 – 12 in Orlu, during which the Brothers elected their new council and drafted recommendations on its animation, community, mission and governance.

The new council is now formed by Brothers Christopher Onwuasoanya, Christian Onu, Elias Iwu, Ekene Osuji, Benedict Umoh, and the Provincial, Br. Vincent Abadom, who replaced Br Joachim Ezetulugo.

Superior general Brother Ernesto Sánchez and Brother Kenneth McDonald, general councillor, took part on behalf of the general administration.

The Chapter’s recommendations are:

  • The provincial and council should ensure the effectiveness of the spirituality/animation commission
  • The in-coming administration should provide good community structures and facilitate healthy and good community living
  • Intensify the training of community animators
  • The incoming administration should consider opening a day school to cater for the less privileged
  • Intensify Marist Youth Ministry in the province to create more opportunities for the less privileged children and young people
  • Involve the lay Marist and past students more in the life and mission of the province
  • There should be a review of the central funding system and financial activities of the province
  • Establishment should be given enough fund to maintain the establishment
  • Brothers’ holiday and personal allowances should be reviewed upward
  • There should be equity and fairness in distributing common wealth
