Provincial Retreat of México Occidental

The Brothers of the Province of México Occidental held their Provincial Retreat 2021, from 27 to 31 December, under the title “I make all things new” (Revelation 21, 5). The seventeen communities of the province participated both in person and online. The communities of El Paso, Ciudad Juárez, Sisoguichi, Tepic, Villa de Guadalupe, Volcán el Oro, Casa Provincial, Morelia and Kanasín (Mérida) gathered in the premises of Spacio La Valla, in Guadalajara; while the communities of Ciudad de Carmen, Mérida, Ocotlán, Cocula, Tepatitlán, Los Mochis, Monterrey and Mexicali, followed the Retreat via online transmission.

The meditations and reflections were guided online by Fr Javier Melloni SJ, who, from his home in Manresa, Spain, proposed a series of biblical texts for personal meditation.

The retreat also commemorated the Brothers who died during the year 2021 and the fidelity of the jubilarians of the province: Alfredo Moreno, Bruno Cortés, José Guadalupe Aldrete, (70 years of religious life); Eduardo Torres, Elías Pérez, Sigifredo Jiménez, Manuel Villalobos, (60 years of religious life); Miguel Ángel Santos and Juan Manuel Plasencia (50 years of religious life); and Sergio Cáceres (25 years of religious life).

At the conclusion of the Provincial Retreat, the Provincial, Br. Luis Enrique Rodríguez, shared his initial experience of the last few months as leader of the Administrative Unit. Br. Luis Enrique noted that he found a lot of life in the communities and a new way of being in the works where the “being” is emphasised over the “doing” of the Marist Brother. The provincial also thanked the Brothers for their determination to continue to give audacious responses in the midst of the pandemic situation.

The Brothers received the traditional commissioning to their communities with the sign of the tzik’ri (eye of God wirrárika), a symbol representing the ability to see through the eyes of God.
