Report of the Province of México Occidental

A report, dated January 2011, has reached the General House on the current situation in Haiti, coming from the Marist Province of México Occidental. It states that “a year after the earthquake that devastated Haiti on 12 January 2010, the present report describes the evolution of the response given to the contingency, as well as the progress made by the three Marist communities present in Haiti”.

In a dozen pages it gives a summary of the current situation of the Marist works on the island. It begins by recording that the brothers celebrated 25 years of Marist presence in Haiti in 2010, a work begun by the brothers of Canada and today the responsibility of the Province of México Occidental. It goes on to describe the present situation of each of the works in Dame-Marie (Notre-Dame de Fatima School and Notre-Dame de la Nativité College), Latibolière (“Alexandre Dumas”College) and Jérémie, where the postulancy is situated.

The report alludes to the consequences of the earthquake of 12 January 2010 and to the situation in which numerous families are still living; it indicates the amount of donations received and where they have been directed; and it concludes with a glance to the future: “Unfortunately, many months after the earthquake, there are still enormous needs to attend to”. To respond to these needs, some urgent projects led by the Province of “México Occidental” have been carried out, such as buying basic foods or building materials, and others are in progress to provide continuing response to the needs of the country.
