Province West Africa: A Journey of Growth Amidst Challenges

The Marist Mission in the Province of West Africa is deeply rooted in Gospel values and our commitment to providing quality education to children and young people. Anchored in the teachings of Christ and inspired by the vision of St. Marcellin Champagnat, our mission focuses on shaping young minds academically, morally, and spiritually. However, the past seven years have brought immense challenges especially due to the ongoing Anglophone crisis in Cameroon. This socio-political conflict has caused a significant drop in enrolment for many schools in the North and Southwest Regions, with families fleeing due to insecurity and schools also facing disruptions. Meanwhile, our newest school, barely three years old in Douala, is still in its initial stages and has yet to attract many students. Despite these hurdles, our dedication to education as a transformative tool remains unwavering.

The strengths of our mission lie in our resilience, adaptability, and the dedication of the Brothers, lay collaborators, and staff who work tirelessly to sustain our educational institutions. Our schools are recognized as safe spaces where young people experience holistic growth, value formation, and personal development. Even amidst the turmoil, they become beacons of Christ’s presence. The challenges are however overwhelming as the socio-political crises have greatly affected the educational system in the Anglophone regions, with insecurity, kidnappings, and economic hardships making it difficult for families to send their children to school. These challenges test our faith and compel us to seek innovative ways to continue serving with Gospel-inspired hope.

As a Province made up of five countries (Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, Chad, and Ivory Coast), we draw strength from our diversity and unity in Christ. The missionary spirit is alive in the Province, with Brothers forming international Communities and supporting one another across borders. This collaboration enriches our mission and allows us to address local challenges from a global perspective. Through solidarity, resource sharing, and mutual encouragement, we continue to grow as a Province, expanding our reach and deepening our impact.

The challenges we face as a Province, whether socio-political instability, economic constraints, or systemic injustices, remind us to place our trust in God and remain faithful to our Marist calling. These difficulties remind us of the global nature of our Institute and the importance of solidarity across all regions. By addressing these issues with courage and collaboration, we contribute to the global Marist mission and reaffirm our shared commitment to building a better future for children and young people, even in the most difficult circumstances.

In conclusion, our mission remains a beacon of hope and continues to thrive, bringing light and radiating Gospel values and Christ’s love to those we serve. Trusting in God’s providence, we believe that the seeds we sow today will bear abundant fruit in the lives of the young people entrusted to our care.
