The Pope recognizes the martyrdom of Brother Lycarion (Benjamín May)

Pope Francis authorized, on January 27, the signing of the decree that recognizes the martyrdom of Brother Lycarion (Francisco Benjamín May), who was killed during the events known as the “Tragic Week” of 1909 in Spain. The promulgation of the decree by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints acknowledges this important step in the beatification process and confirms his total dedication to the Gospel and his testimony of faith, even unto death.

This recognition is not only a cause for joy for our congregation but also for the entire Church, as it highlights the figure of a man who fully lived his vocation as an educator and witness of Christ’s love. Brother Lycarion is an example of faithfulness and service in difficult times, and his life invites all Christians to live holiness in ordinary circumstances.

Brother Lycarion (Francisco Benjamín May by birth) was born in Switzerland, where from a young age he showed a generous heart open to the will of God. He joined our congregation to dedicate himself to Christian education, and he stood out for his humility, spirit of prayer, and commitment to the formation of young people. His mission took him to Spain, where he continued his educational work until his death during the tragic events of 1909 in Barcelona.

The beatification cause of Brother Lycarion began in 1966, when the story of the martyrs of the Civil War regained prominence, and he was named the protomartyr of our brothers who were killed for the faith during that period. Soon after, along with the other Spanish causes, this cause was paused, as there were concerns it could be used for political purposes. It was able to resume in 1992. With the approval of this decree, the Church has taken a decisive step toward inscribing him in the catalog of martyrs.

We invite all our communities and friends to join us in celebrating this significant event. This recognition encourages us to strengthen our commitment to the evangelical values that Brother Lycarion lived with such intensity.

In the coming weeks, we will share details about the beatification ceremony and the celebrations that will be organized in his honor. We invite you to stay tuned to our updates and to join us spiritually in this great joy for our religious family.
