The XII message of the International Mission Commission of the Marist Institute is entitled “To be of service – Volunteering and service-learning”. The message echoes n. 115 of the Encyclical Fratelli Tutti, which speaks about solidarity and service. It also responds to the call of the Strategic Plan 2017-2025 which seeks to strengthen service and volunteering by giving concrete expression to Call 4 of the General Chapter (2017) which invites us to “journey with children and young people living on the margins of life”.

The message, based on the contributions of the Marist International Mission Commission, has been prepared, this time, by Br Valdicer Civa Fachi, Director of the Department of the Collaboration for International Mission (CMI).

The text, divided into three parts, addresses the meanings of “service-learning” and “volunteering” from a Marist perspective and theoretical concepts. In the same way, it explains the development and importance of Marist volunteering in the Administrative Units and highlights Service-Learning as a starting point for developing a culture of solidarity, for Marist Youth Ministry and for Volunteering.

In this message, the International Mission Commission of the Marist Institute calls on all Marists, brothers and lay, to build a Global Charismatic Family together, and invites them:

  • To continue and reaffirm our option for poor and marginalized young people.
  • To prepare Marists of Champagnat to live and carry out their ministries, in an interconnected and collaborative manner, in a spirit of service.
  • To empower children and young people and let them lead. We are with them and for them.
  • To create concrete opportunities for training and accompaniment for volunteers in all the AUs.
  • To build up networks of life and mission by creating esprit de corps and a common identity.
  • To serve, as Jesus of Nazareth did.

The Marist International Mission Commission, made up of Brothers and Lay people, took on the task of reflecting on the centrality of Marist mission in today’s world. In this link you will find all the messages that the Commission has published.
