John Bantz

Bro. John Bantz FMS, a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools for 55 years, died on September 6, 2014 at the Champagnat Hall Residence in the Bronx. He was 76 years old.

Born in New York City, Bro. John initially attended Mount Saint Michael Academy but completed his high school years at the Marist Brothers’ Juniorate in Esopus, New York. He entered the Marist Brothers’ Novitiate, at Tyngsboro, MA in 1958.

He professed his first vows in 1960. After completing his religious and academic studies at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York, he began his teaching ministry in 1963 at St. Joseph School in Trumbull, CT. In 1964 Bro. John moved to Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx where he served until 1971.

Bro. John studied at Yeshiva University and received a M.S. degree in Mathematics in 1969. For six years Bro. John taught at Luke M. Powers High School in Flint, MI, then one year at Bishop Carroll High School in Ebensberg, PA as a guidance counselor. He then moved to Miami to serve as Asssistant Principal at Christopher Columbus High School from 1978 to 1983.

Bro. John then returned to the Archdiocese of New York where he taught at St. Agnes High School until 1984.

Bro. John completed his administrative career serving as Guidance Counselor, Principal and President of Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx from 1987 to 2006. Bro. John then served the Mount community by working in the Development Office

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Mount Saint Michael Academy, Tuesday, September 9 followed by burial at the Marist Brothers’ Cemetery in Esopus, New York.
