Virgilius Carroll

Brother Virgilius died this evening (Wednesday, 30 December) at 7.25pm. His funeral is likely to be mid next week. Details will be communicated when finalised.

Ignatius Carroll was born in Cootamundra in March 1924. He started the Juniorate at Mittagong in January 1938 and entered the Novitiate in July 1942. He took first vows before the end of World War II in 1943, and Final Vows in 1948. He was a Marist Brother for 73 years and 6 months.

During his Religious Life he had 19 ministry appointments. Other than one year at Thebarton in 1944, three and a half years at Hamilton and six years in Lismore, all his appointments were within the Sydney region.

He had 4 years at Eastwood, 7 years at Bondi Beach, 12 years at Kogarah and a total of 26 years at Randwick. Virg moved to Molloy House at Campbelltown in 2013 and was well cared for by doctors, nursing staff and the Brothers’ community. His sisters, Pat and Ruth and their families were very loyal and supportive.

Virg was a fine cricketer, a keen golfer and a highly effective Sports Master in a number of schools. He loved a yarn and was good company in community. He was a strong character, with a simple but deep faith. He faced his final illness with equanimity and died peacefully.

May he rest in Peace.
