Mid Hudson Valley Camp – Marist Brothers Center at Esopus

class=imgshadowThe 2014 Mid-Hudson Valley Camp season kicked off on Sunday, June 22nd, when 46 children arrived at the MBCE for a week long camp experience. This week Deaf Camp celebrated its 39th year here in Esopus.

An exciting new feature to this year’s program was the integration of Outdoor Adventure elements into the daily camp schedule. Campers used the Muse, the Mohawk Walk, the 10 foot Wall, the Whale Watch, the Rock Wall, as well as initiative activities. The “challenge by choice” philosophy of the outdoor adventure program encouraged these young people to stretch their comfort zones and reach new heights despite their physical disabilities.

During the course of the week, our volunteers had the opportunity to participate in Goodworks, an app developed by Kevin Brady, an alumnus of Roselle Catholic High School. Goodworks is an app that al- lows the MBCE to raise money by matching volunteer hours with donor dollars. Volunteers were rewarded with game coins, which at the end of the day were allocated to “rewards” funded by the Brady-Cashill Foundation. Excitement built as the week went on since reaching a goal of 500 coins ($5,000) resulted in a bonus of an additional $2,000 dollars also being rewarded to that project.

Strategizing together, they raised $ 24,000 which will be used for maintenance equipment, a new swing set, outdoor adventure equipment, as well as some new mattresses and bedding.

In just one week, our volunteers not only provided a fun-filled safe environment for our campers, they also helped to shape the future of Esopus!
