Philippines, General Santos City: Br.Fernando Armendez celebrates golden jubilee

BrotherBrother Fernando Armendez celebrated 50 years of religious life as a Marist Brother last December 29, 2004 in a simple but meaningful liturgy at the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Lagao, General Santos City. The theme of the celebration was, ?You who have followed me will receive a hundred times more.?

Br. Fernando, whom we fondly call Br. Pops, is the oldest Filipino Marist Brother and to be the first one to celebrate his golden jubilee. He belongs to the second group of Filipinos who went for formation in the United States. Br. Pops entered the novitiate in 1954.

Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, OMI, DD, a high school mate of Br. Pops at the then Notre Dame of Marbel Boys? Department, presided over the Eucharist and was at the same time the homilist. Brothers from the different ministries, formands, lay mission partners, families, and friends gathered to join the jubilarian in this momentous event. Br. Manuel de Leon, Provincial of the Philippine Province, gave the tribute.

After the Mass, a sumptuous lunch was shared by all those present, around 600 people, at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas College, High School, Lagao Campus gym. It was such a wonderful way of thanking God for the gift of vocation, and it would surely have inspired those next in line to continue trusting in God?s fidelity.
