Marist Mission Ad Gentes Project

The new FMS arrivals in Cambodia normally spend close to two years learning and practicing Khmer, the local language, before they move into a concrete ministry. Once in the place of apostolate, of course, they continue studying the language at the same time that they become involved in all kind of activities. Brother Leonard Brito is the Community Superior of Phnom Penh Student Community while Max Meier is the econome. These three Brothers will soon move to Kampong Cham in South West Cambodia to explore possibilities for the establishing of a new community and educational project over there. The student Brothers, Max and Pedro, are making good progress in the mastering of the Khmer language. Pedro, as a good disciple of Maradona, is also becoming an international celebrity in the soccer world of Phnom Penh!

The Province of Sydney is running a school for handicapped children in Phnom Penh for the last fifteen years or so. There has always been a Marist community responsible for the running of this school and the animation of teachers and students. Lavalla School has a very good name in Phnom Penh and on the whole of Cambodia and it has been presented as a good example of what can be done to help handicapped children and young men and women to overcome their limitations and complete their education with success. Brother Terry Heinrich, its director, is a well known personality in Cambodia. The AMAG Brothers have all visited the school and community and have spent some time in it. Recently, our two Cambodian aspirants, Sita and Sokli have spent a couple of weeks with Brothers Terry and Daryl for their apostolic and community experience.
