The Marists and the Moslem culture

Aljamahir is the only newspaper of the city of Aleppo. In its edition of Tuesday 4th April 2006, the newspaper published an article entitled: ?The Marists and the Moslem culture.?
The author of this article is Georges Mrayati, the father of some young members of our different apostolic activities.

Our young people wanted to participate in their own way in the different activities celebrated in Aleppo: ?Capital in 2006 of Islamic Culture.?
The newspaper, and for the second time in the modern history of Syria, speaks of the Marist Brothers, of their young people, their educational activities and their commitments as citizens for the development of their city.

Here are some extracts from the article:

?For those who have forgotten among the population of Aleppo, there exists a community that lives just beside the university, in an annex of the premises of a college long time considered as a beacon of science, of education and of spirituality, since it has formed hundreds of students who occupy key posts on the international and local scene.

Throughout time, the college used to be called ?Marist Brothers College? and today it is called the ?College of Fraternity?. After the seizure of schools in 1967, a few brothers remained. They celebrated the centenary of their arrival in Aleppo in 2004. This community pursues its spiritual mission with discretion and patience, in the footsteps of the founder Saint Marcellin Champagnat, a friend of young people, according to Marist spirituality. They opened the doors of their house to tens of young people who chose the social commitment to the poor and those in need. Young volunteers committed for the good of the Church, the society and the country.
We do not forget the property campaign led by these same young people in the different streets of the city.

The young people have been invited to a great rally of Islamic culture organised by their leaders in which they have developed their knowledge by using many means: research on the Internet, contact with Moslem friends and reference to their own knowledge.

We congratulate the Marist Brothers and their young people. Through their initiative, they are forming young Christians and Moslems, to build together a civilisation faithful to principles and open to others, willing to build the country by counting on God.?
