Brother Henry M. (Hank) Sammon, FMS died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 in Miami, Florida. He was 76 years old and in his 48th year of Marist religious life.
Brother Hank was born in Manhattan, New York City on August 28, 1946. He was the son of the late Matthew and Mary Bradley Sammon. After attending St. Vincent Ferrer elementary school in Manhattan, he began studies at Cardinal Hayes High School, Bronx, New York where he met the Marist Brothers. He completed a BA in Biology from St. Francis College and in 1973 went to teach at Marist High School in Eugene, Oregon as a Marist Candidate. He entered the Marist Novitiate in Cold Spring-on-Hudson, NY in 1975 and pronounced first vows in 1976. He served as assistant director of the Marist Retreat House in Esopus, NY and in 1977 joined the faculty of Marist High School, Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, he pronounced his final vows on November 28, 1979. He completed an MSA in Finance at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana in 1980 and became assistant Provincial Treasurer in 1982. In 1983 he went to teach at Sacred Heart School, Bronx, NY and in 1987 he was appointed Acting Principal at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx. In 1989-1990 he served as Academic Dean at Mount St. Michael and in 1990 he became Provincial Treasurer for the Marist Brothers based in Bayonne, NJ. He was then comptroller for the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt, NY from 1998 until 2001.
In 2001, Brother Hank began work for the US Conference of Bishops in Washington, DC. He was Associate Director working primarily with the Retirement Program for Religious Congregations. During this time, he received a JCL in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America in 2005. In 2018 he moved to the Marist Brothers community in Palmetto Bay, Florida. In recent years he continued to serve as a finance advisor to a number of committees of the Marist Brothers Institute.
In addition to his parents, Brother Hank was predeceased by his brother, Brother Seán Sammon, FMS. He is survived by his sister Moira Magro and her husband Michael, his niece Jessica, her husband Karn and grandnieces Michaela and Ava, his nephew Christopher, his wife Maria, grandnephew Michael and grandniece Mariella. He is also survived by his Marist Brothers.
