“Those who have the service role of authority like us also have a particular responsibility for moving our Congregations beyond where they are now because, in the end, the most important decisions pass across our desks. We have in our hands the power to open and shut, put the brakes on or push. We are all invited to add a dose of folly and audacity to our lives and to go beyond what is known. To leave our comfort zone and go to a space where miracles happen”.
Br Emili Turú, Superior General, is convinced of this. At the 88th Assembly of the USG meeting in Rome, he presented the project Lavalla200> and went on to say, “things cannot remain as they are”, and cited Michael David Semeraro, “it is no longer enough to reform consecrated life; it has to be reformatted, to borrow a phrase from IT” (download doc word).
“Whether we like it or not, we are faced with new needs, new speeds, new ways of writing and communicating. We cannot turn backwards but we have to find a new system for tapping into our deepest desires and for doing all we can to bring them to life, listening to the calls coming from our brothers and sisters around the globe. The challenge posed by the Gospel is not that of defending oneself from the world but of living in it. We need more courage. We cannot allow ourselves to be paralysed by dangers, but energised, as happened to our founders in their time, by the calls coming from their historical circumstances, seeking to get the balance right between what we have already tried and what we are yet to try, being willing to adopt, after serious discernment, provisional steps, a degree of experimentation as well as courageous and bold initiatives that embody what we stand for.”
