At the conclusion of the Easter Vigil at the General House in Rome, Brother Seán, our Superior General, greeted all the brothers and their guests. Here is a transcript of his remarks.

A mother was preparing a special breakfast pastry for her sons, Fabio, 5, and Maximo, 3. But, the boys began to argue over who would get the first pastry. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.
?Boys,? she said, ?If Jesus was sitting here, He would say, ?Let my brother have the first pastry. I can wait.?? Upon hearing these words of his mother, Fabio turned to his younger brother and said, Maximo, you be Jesus.
So, what is the point of this story, and what does it have to do with Easter? The answer to these two questions is quite simple: Both the story and the feast we celebrate today remind us that to be a disciple of Jesus, we must pay a price. Yes, to be a disciple of Jesus, we must take responsibility for what is important in life.
Marcellin Champagnat understood that fact all too well. Though others opposed him, he persisted in proclaiming the Word of God directly to poor children and young people, and he did so with a fire, and a passion, and a determination that has helped change our world.
You and I must do the same today: proclaim God?s Word?loud and clear?to poor children and young people. And like Marcellin we need to do so with fire and passion. With what result? Hopefully, a profound change of heart for each of us, and the transformation of our Institute.
So, let?s not imitate Fabio in our story, but instead, let?s be responsible and proclaim God?s word?loud and clear?to poor young people, and let us do so with courage, with clarity, and with conviction. Simply put, this year let us allow the feast of Jesus? resurrection to stretch us, to disturb us, to compel us into action on behalf of his gospel.
