The Launching of the Document In the Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat: Marist Educational Mission

During the Marist International Mission Assembly, in the last day, on April 14, 2024, at El Escorial, Spain, there will be the launch of the new edition of “In the Footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat: Marist Educational Mission“. For Marist educators, this document is a living resource, inspiring and encouraging them to remain open to new realities and to interpret and apply its principles within each ministry. It will continue to provide significant support to the mission embraced by Marists of Champagnat.

The special event, scheduled during the MIMA, will be attended by participants from various Marist regions and provinces. The launch event will feature Br. Ernesto Sánchez Barba, Superior General, and other members of the General Council.

How was the document developed?

The initiative was led by an international team tasked with revising the existing document. Collaborating closely with the Secretariat of Education and Evangelization, the team embarked on an intensive effort beginning in 2021. They undertook a thorough revision process, inspired by the principles of “Discover, Dream, Design, and Deliver,” to update the original document.

Throughout this process, the team consulted with groups of brothers and laity within the Institute. A pivotal face-to-face meeting took place on April 4-8, 2022, in L’Hermitage, Lyon. During this gathering, and with the valuable guidance of Brother Joseph McKee, the team presented their progress and finalized the document.

Following the completion of the final draft, the document was submitted to the General Council for approval. After receiving input and feedback, the General Council officially approved the revised document in September 2023.

What is the document about?

The Institute is presenting a document that upholds the foundational insights of the 1998 text while also addressing contemporary realities, proposals, and orientations. Embracing a holistic perspective, this document distinctly incorporates the voices of various stakeholders, mission domains, thematic contents, values, and educational and evangelizing initiatives that resonate with the current dynamics of the Marist community. It serves as a catalyst for Marists to “look beyond” in their mission journey, fostering a belief in a future brimming with hope and opportunities. Above all, it instills a collective commitment among all Marists to keep alive the visionary legacy of St. Marcellin Champagnat, remaining ever present within each individual’s heart.
