Brother Dominic M. O’Brien, FMS – July 3, 1934 – March 4, 2024

Brother Dominic O’Brien passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024 in Miami, Florida.  He was 89 years old and in his 72nd year of Marist religious life.

Brother Dominic was born on July 3, 1934 in New York City.  He was the son of the late Raymond F. and Sophie Salendar O’Brien.  He entered the postulancy of the Marist Brothers at St. Joseph Novitiate in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts in 1951.  He received the habit and began his novitiate on July 26, 1952.  He pronounced first vows on July 26, 1953 and then went to the Scholasticate at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York where he receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1956.

He taught at Marist High School in Bayonne, New Jersey (1956 – 1959), St Mary’s High School in Manhasset, New York (1959 – 1961), Msgr. Edward Pace High School in Opa Locka, Florida (1961 – 1963), and St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville, Texas (1963 – 1964). He completed an MA degree in Guidance from Seton Hall University in 1964 and served on the faculty of Roselle Catholic High School (1964 – 1971).  During this time, he received an MA in Religious Studies from Manhattan College in 1970.

From 1971 until his retirement, Brother Dominic served in the roles of Director of Religious Education, Youth Minister and Coordinator of Youth Retreats in a number of parishes in New Jersey, Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Florida.  In 2019 he retired to the Marist Brothers Community in Miami Florida where he lived until the time of his death.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Chapel of the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus.  Burial will follow in the Marist Brothers Cemetery, Esopus, New York.
