Julio Vitores
Brother Julio Vitores died peacefully on December 2, 2022 at the Christopher Columbus High School Community in Miami, Florida at the age of 89 and in his 71st year of Marist religious life.
Brother Julio was born in Palencia, Spain and entered the Marist Brothers Novitiate in Turin, Italy, making his first profession of vows in 1952. In 1954, he received a BA in Education from Gerona Maristas in Spain. In 1964 he made his second Novitiate in Lyons, France. His career as an educator included teaching in Marist schools in Cuba, Spain, Guatemala, El Salvador, Japan, Switzerland, and in New Jersey, Texas, and Miami (USA). He received an MA in Education from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and a degree in Theology from the University of Paris.
Fluent in four languages, Brother Julio mainly taught Spanish and French, but he had experience in teaching nearly all subjects. He was also quite a sports enthusiast having started the first soccer team in Miami as well as in other Marist schools. He had been a track coach and an excellent skier and tennis player.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Brendan’s Church in Miami, Florida on December 5th and burial will be in the Marist Brothers Cemetery in Esopus, New York on Friday, December 9, 2022.
