Letters of Marcellin – 126

Marcellin Champagnat

1837-08-04

Brother Apollinaire has been studying at Saint-Paul for two years (cf. L. 60, note), but there have been several interruptions (cf. L. 65), no doubt because of an illness which has dragged on for years (cf. LL. 128, 141, 147, 198). At the time this letter was written, he has just had another relapse. Father Champagnat, being very concerned about this young invalid, invites him to take a rest, since his health is more important than studies or diplomas.

Notre Dame de lHermitage, 4th August 1837

My very dear Brother Apollinaire,

I was extremely sorry that I could not continue my trip all the way to St-Paul-Trois-Chateaux. I so much wanted to see you and give you as much consolation as I possibly could.

What upsets me most of all is that they told me you were sick. You must not get so sick, dear friend, that you can no longer recover. If you were in the army, they would give you time to recuperate. Ask Father Mazelier for permission to come here to do so. If you havent obtained your certificate of competence by September, you will get it later. We dont want to bury you so soon; you havent done enough for heaven yet! I am heartbroken just knowing you are sick. Throw yourself into the arms of our common Mother; she will be touched by your condition and that of your confrères, and she can easily give you the help you need.

Tell Father Superior how sorry you are that you cannot complete your preparation for the certificate just now. Have the doctor certify your illness with the mayor, if Fr. Mazelier thinks it wise.

Thank the brother who was giving you lessons and everyone else who has done anything for you. When you have recovered, you will return there.

A Dieu, dear brother; I leave you in the Sacred Hearts, and I am your most devoted father in Jesus and Mary,

Champagnat

P.S. If Brother Victor can continue until September, he will take the examination with Brother Cyprien and Brother Andronic.
