The Teaching Profession in Information Societies: Profession and Mission

The goal of the Marist Union of Brazil (UMBRAZIL) is to link educators of the Marist Brothers? Network in Brazil, and to bring together other like-minded educational networks for purposes of reflection and updating about the issues and challenges of contemporary education. UM-BRAZIL will hold its third National Education Congress, international version. The topic of the Congress is: The Educator?s Role in Information Societies: Profession and Mission.

General Goal
To think about the teaching profession and to get involved in situating the educator?s role in (1) the professional world, and (2) the educative mission. To think about the two issues in the context of contemporary social changes

Specific Objectives
1. To analyze critically the professional dimension of the teaching role and its mission in the contemporary world.
2. To get a better understanding of the nature of an information society and its implications for education.
3. To challenge educators to take on a transformative role.
4. To reflect on the teaching profession in information societies.
Who is the Congress for? Marist educators; teachers in Catholic schools; organizations tied to education; educators coming from other systems and from other teaching networks whether public or private.

Venue: Events Centre of the Catholic Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul – CEPUC – Porto Alegre – RS – Brazil

Date: July 15 to 18, 2008

Anticipated enrollment: 2600 participants
At the same time, another assembly will take place: The First National Congress of Marist Edu-cators. The topic of the assembly is, ?The Teaching Profession in Information Societies.?
