Hello Marist Young Adults!
During the past month, many in our Marist family have faced challenges. Hurricane Sandy caused much destruction and disruption. With devices in each hand that we are rarely separated from, the power outages left many feeling disconnected, uneasy and even scared. However, in the midst of the darkness, with no light glowing from our televisions, computers and phones, the kindness of others shone brightly! There were many opportunities to be negative or depressed but facing these hardships were easier because of the love shared by many in our communities.
Our Marist community was no different. I was struck by how many of you posted on facebook that you were heading to the affected areas to offer help. Some of you participated in or organized relief efforts in your areas and others gathered things to be sent to those in need. It is amazing how you made Jesus known and loved just by the love and prayers that you sent to others.
Look for more opportunities to be of service to those in need and to be a light in the darkness. We will be having opportunities to gather in each region during Advent and throughout the semester break! I also hope that you will take advantage of our upcoming Online Advent Retreat. You can find the retreat videos on our website, www.MaristYoungAdult.com, or on our new Marist YAP app. available in Blackberry, iOS, and Android platforms.

Throughout the month of November, Americans traditionally give thanks for the all that they have. This awareness often encourages people to give generously to those who have less, but poverty exists all year long. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have two websites that educate about poverty and offer suggested actions. The website for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development,
www.povertyusa.org, presents the facts about poverty in the United States while offering stories of hope. The website for Catholic Relief Services,
poverty.org, addresses the causes of world-wide poverty while offering suggestions for using social media to raise awareness and an opportunity to sign up for action alerts. ONLINE SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
December 1st is World AIDS Day. To mark that day, one.org has begun a campaign called "It starts with me" to develop awareness and to encourage people to sign a petition to make suport continued funding for global AIDS programs. To visit the website and sign the petition, click on the image above.

 Marist Young Adults throughout the country participated in a Day of Fasting to raise their awareness of hunger…Marist Young Adults in the Washington, DC area – Mike Bourie, a Central Catholi alum., and Kristen Laubacker, a Lourdes alum., met with Matt Fallon…New blogs have been posted by Danny Chomat, Stanley De La Cruz, Luis Ramos and Catherine Weening…Joe LoGiuidice, Joe Tavera and Caroline White have been organizing Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in the New York area…Valerie Savino, Erin Sisk, Mike Power and Maria Acevedo will be offering reflections during the online Advent Retreat…The Marist Young Adult mobile app. has been downloaded over 1100 times in its first month and was featured on the Marist Brothers international website, www.champagnat.org!

High School: Marist High School – Chicago
College Marquette Uviversity
Interests: Playing piano, traveling, going to concerts and Blackhawks games, hanging out with friends, playing soccer and mission trips
Accomplishments: First female Student Council President at Marist; Scholarship Recipient at Marquette
How did you get involved with Marist?
At Marist High School there were many things to get involved in. I participated in Student Council all four years and served as president during my senior year. I went on two mission trips to New Orleans, being a leader my second time there. I was able to do local service through Marist Youth, serving sandwiches to the less fortunate. I also played piano at school masses and for charity events.
Why are you still involved with the Marist community?
I am still involved with the Marist community because being Marist lasts for life. The Marist community has impacted my life so much that it is something I cannot get enough of. The faculty, staff, brothers, teachers, coaches and students that I have met have taught me so many life lessons. I have been blessed to experience things that many high school students don't have the opportunity to experience, such as service and a sense of family spirit.
How do you live out your Marist identity today?
Marist still lives within me. "To make Jesus known and loved." is the motto I live by. It is a guide to me to be respectful always, even to my enemies and to those different from me, and to treat others the way I want to be treated. To me, one can make Jesus known and loved through something as simple as a smile. Besides wearing my Marist Youth necklace and having my Marcellin pin on my backpack, I live out my Marist identity by being an agent of justice, love, respect, faith, and service.
