World Youth Day 2013

The official logo for the next World Youth Day, to be held in Rio de Janeiro in July 2013, was launched on 7 February. The winner of the competition is Gustavo Huguenin, 25, from the city of Cantagalo. The chosen logo has bright colours; it represents the colours of Brasil and, at the same time, one of its best known symbols, Christ the Redeemer. One detail of the logo attracts attention: the heart, referring immediately to the heart of Christ, welcoming and disinterested, simple and direct.

Based on the Day’s motto: « Go and make disciples of all nations», the composition expresses a direct reference to the image of Jesus and the meaning of being a disciple. In the passage cited, Jesus meets his disciples on a mountain, after his resurrection. As the symbol of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer also stands on a mountain; it is a monument famous all over the world. The motto is a mandate of Jesus himself; so his image is placed in relief at the centre of the symbol.

The elements of the logo compose the image of a heart. In the faith of the peoples, the heart plays a central role, in the image of Brasil which will be the centre of youth on the World Day. There is an allusion to the totality of the « interior man », with reference to the disciples who have Jesus in their heart.

The arms of Christ the Redeemer extend beyond the figure of the heart, symbolising thus the welcoming embrace of God to the people and the youth who will come to Brasil. They represent our welcome as a people with a generous and hospitable heart.

The upper part (in green) is inspired by the lines of the « Sugar Loaf », universal symbol of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the cross on the top reinforces the meaning of the region of Brasil known as « Terra de Santa Cruz » (Land of Holy Cross). The edge forms of the lower part of the heart are in blue, representing the coastline; and green and yellow are added to transmit the patriotic sense of the three colours of the national flag.

The World Youth Day will be held in Rio de Janeiro, from 23 to 28 July 2013. As with Sydney and Madrid, the International Marist Youth Meeting will take place before the WYD, from 17 to 22 July. The organizing commission for the meeting has just met for the second time these recent days.
