Br. Gabriele Andreucci (1933-2024)

On March 14, 2024, at the age of 90, in Carmagnola, Italy, Brother Gabriele Andreucci died, after 73 years of religious life.

Gabriele, whose civil name was Fidardo, was born on September 1, 1933, in San Lorenzo Nuovo, Viterbo, Italy. He dedicated his life as a Marist religious. He entered the postulancy in 1948 and took the habit on July 26, 1949, adopting the name Gabriele. He made his first profession on July 26, 1950 and his perpetual profession on July 3, 1955.

Postulator of the Institute

He was appointed Postulator General of the Marist Institute on June 5, 1990 and ratified by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on February 13, 1991.

During his mandate, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the decrees of juridical validity for the process of Crisanto, Aquilinus, Cyprian Joseph and 53 other Marist Brothers and 2 laypeople.

Brother Gabriele played an important role in the Founder’s canonization process, carrying out the procedures to prove a miracle that occurred in Uruguay through the intercession of Saint Marcellin. With the canonization of Marcellin in 1999, Brother Andreucci arranged for the approval of the Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass of Marcellin Champagnat, as well as a particular calendar for the Marist Institute. He took part in Marcellin’s canonization and supported the installation in St. Peter’s Basilica of the statue donated by the Costa Rican ambassador. He also finalized the Positio on Brother Bernardo and began drafting a new Positio on Brother Laurentino and his martyred companions, in order to bring it into line with the 1983 norms of canon law.

He accompanied the diocesan process of the cause of Brother Eusebio and 58 companions in the diocese of Barcelona, presenting it to the Holy See. He also accompanied the cause of Brother Lycarion, requesting an additional process in the diocese of Barcelona and the opening and juridical validity in Rome.

Brother Gabriele concluded his mandate as Postulator on July 31, 2001.

Brother Gabriele Andreucci’s legacy lives on in his tireless dedication and service to Marist work, leaving a lasting impact on the Marist community.
