Br. José Abel Muñoz Gutiérrez appointed Provincial of Iberica

In a letter sent to the Province on October 15, Brother Ernesto Sanchez, Superior General, communicated that the General Council, after studying the survey conducted, has decided to appoint Brother José Abel Muñoz Gutiérrez as Provincial of Ibérica for a first term of three years. Br. José Abel will begin his term as Provincial during the celebration of the next Provincial Chapter, which will take place from December 26-30, 2021.

In his letter, Br Ernesto underlined his gratitude to Br Abel for his readiness and generosity in accepting this service of Province leadership. He also underlined: “your journey as a Brother, your experience of several years on the Council and in the Provincial animation teams, currently as Vice-Provincial, your participation as delegate to the XXII General Chapter, all this will help you to serve the Brothers and lay people of your Province with commitment and passion”.

Br Abel takes over from Br Moises Alonso Pérez, Provincial since 2015. Br Ernesto also expressed his gratitude to him: “Thank you, Moises! You have been a warm-hearted and dedicated leader accompanying a variety of Marist presences in Spain and Romania, sometimes in situations that have not been easy”.

Br. José Abel Muñoz Gutiérrez

Brother Abel was born in 1974 in Villafranca (Navarra). His first contact with the Marists was in his home town. He continued his formation in Lardero and Biurrun, where he made his first profession in 1993.

He studied Biological Sciences in Pamplona and Religious Sciences in Bilbao.

From 1998 to 2016 he lived in Bilbao, first as part of a vocation discernment community, then in the Iturribide school community, and finally sharing life in Erandio, in a community of lay people and brothers.

He currently works in Alcalá de Henares, coordinating the educational works of the Province and is the Vice-Provincial.
